Rivian R1S and R1T Running Boards: Steel, Aluminum or Rock Sliders?

RMaxx running boards installed on a Rivian R1S or R1T at ZEVcentric

Running boards make the Rivian R1S and R1T easier to enter, especially for children, shorter passengers and vehicles that spend time at taller ride heights. But not every step system is designed for the same job. Some prioritize daily convenience, while others add substantial underbody protection for off-road use.

Running board versus rock slider

A running board is primarily a step. A rock slider is intended to protect the rocker area when the vehicle contacts terrain. Some systems combine the two functions, but owners should not assume every board is designed to carry off-road impact loads.

Steel systems

Steel is the natural choice when impact resistance and protection are the priority. The tradeoffs are additional weight and potentially more effect on clearance or efficiency, depending on the design. ZEVcentric offers separate RMaxx steel running boards for the R1T and RMaxx steel running boards for the R1S.

Lightweight aluminum systems

Aluminum can be a better match for drivers focused on daily access and reduced weight. The RMaxx lightweight aluminum running boards are designed as a lighter alternative for compatible R1S and R1T applications. Owners should still confirm whether their intended off-road use requires true slider-level protection.

Aero cover plates

Removing or modifying factory lower covers for a running-board installation can change the appearance and airflow beneath the vehicle. RMaxx aero cover plates are available separately for the R1S and R1T. Confirm compatibility with the exact board and vehicle generation.

What to compare

  • R1S versus R1T fitment
  • Vehicle generation
  • Steel versus aluminum construction
  • Board weight
  • Step width and passenger usability
  • Ground-clearance impact
  • Whether the product is rated for off-road contact
  • Compatibility with factory panels and aero covers
  • Installation and service access

Installed packages

For local customers, ZEVcentric offers steel RMaxx running boards with installation and an aluminum installed package. Professional installation helps ensure the board, brackets and lower panels are positioned correctly.

Choose steel when protection is the primary objective. Choose aluminum when easy entry and lower added weight matter more. If the vehicle will regularly contact rocks or ledges, verify that the selected system is explicitly intended for that use.
