Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Wheel Spacer Fitment and Installation Guide

Wheel spacers can improve stance and create additional clearance between the wheel and suspension, but the correct spacer is determined by more than thickness. Tesla wheel designs, hub dimensions and the pockets on the back of the wheel must all be considered before installation.

What a properly designed spacer must do

  • Seat flat against the vehicle hub
  • Center correctly on the hub
  • Provide the correct bolt pattern and hardware
  • Allow the wheel to seat flat against the spacer
  • Maintain adequate tire-to-body and tire-to-suspension clearance
  • Remain compatible with the specific wheel design

Check the back of the wheel

Studded spacers place a second set of studs between the hub and wheel. The ends of the vehicle’s original studs may protrude beyond the spacer. If that happens, the wheel needs sufficiently deep relief pockets on its mounting pad. Without those pockets, the wheel can contact the original studs instead of seating against the spacer face.

This detail is particularly important because Tesla has used different factory wheel designs over time. A spacer that fits one Model 3 wheel does not automatically fit every other Tesla wheel.

Performance and non-Performance fitment can differ

Brake packages, wheel designs and factory offsets vary by trim. Installation checklist

  1. Inspect and clean the hub face.
  2. Test-fit the spacer and confirm it sits fully flush.

  6. Rotate the wheel by hand and inspect brake, suspension and body clearance.

Do not use a spacer to hide a fitment problem

A spacer changes effective wheel offset and increases how far the tire sits outward. That can improve inner clearance while reducing outer clearance. Tire width, actual section width, ride height, alignment and suspension travel all affect whether rubbing occurs. The final setup should be checked through steering and suspension movement, not only while parked.
