Why Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Tires Wear on the Inside

Inside-edge tire wear is one of the most common concerns we see on Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. Owners are often told that rear camber is automatically the cause, but the correct diagnosis is more nuanced. Camber matters, especially after lowering, but toe and the ability of the suspension bushings to hold the alignment under load can destroy tires surprisingly quickly.

Start with toe, not assumptions

Toe describes whether the tires point slightly toward or away from each other when viewed from above. Even a modest toe error makes a tire scrub across the pavement every mile. A vehicle can show alignment numbers that appear acceptable while sitting on the rack and still move outside the desired range when soft or worn bushings deflect under braking, acceleration and cornering.

Negative camber concentrates more load toward the inside shoulder, but camber by itself does not always create rapid wear. Excessive toe combined with negative camber is usually much more destructive. That is why simply installing rear camber arms without measuring all four wheels may not solve the actual problem.

What should be inspected?

  • Inner, center and outer tread depth at all four tires
  • Front and rear toe on a calibrated alignment rack
  • Rear camber, especially on lowered vehicles
  • Front lower control-arm and compliance bushings
  • Loose components, damaged wheels or bent suspension parts
  • Tire pressure and rotation history

When adjustable camber arms help

Adjustable rear camber arms become useful when the factory adjustment range cannot achieve the desired setting. This frequently applies to lowered vehicles or cars with a specific street or track alignment target.
