Lower / Level the ride height of your Model S / X!

The Model S and X utilize an air suspension system which can be adjusted to different ride heights from the factory – but what if you want to go even lower that “low mode”? Whether it be for looks or for a lower center of gravity, many Model S and X owners are looking for a way to get closer to the ground. With a little trickery of the sensors, we can lower the Model S and X, and keep the height adjustable to your individual preferences in the process.

Our in-house beta testing has proved to be functional and easy to use, so we’re moving into public availability to get more feedback from the community. Funny enough, we developed these quite some time ago, and somehow they were left on the back burner. Today, they’re here to stay – widely available for Model S and X owners looking for precise, easy height adjustment.

Common sense disclaimer:

Please note that these parts are tool that allow you to make adjustments outside of what Tesla has deemed their desired range for the vehicle. If you opt to make small adjustments, we don’t see any issue. However, if you decide to max these things out, or go outside of the included sizing, you’re asking for trouble. Just like you can use a ratchet to break bolts if you overtighten them, you may be able to use these links to damage components of the suspension or drivetrain.

Concept and design:

As with most vehicles equipped with air suspension, it is possible to fine-tune the ride height by manipulating the lengths of the linkage or position of the ride height sensor. This tricks the vehicle to use the new ride height, because it “thinks” it is still at the original ride height.

Most lowering links are designed with a fiddly turnbuckle adjustment, which can seize up over time and become incredibly difficult to adjust. We used a shim style approch instead, which is robust and infinently repeatable to adjust. You can quickly go from one setting back to another and know that it is exactly the same.

While there is some loss of resolution in using shims versus an infinetly adjustable turnbuckle adjuster, the reality is that the Tesla air suspension works in a very large “window” and inside of around 2mm of ride height adjustment you’ll just be chasing your tail forever. This is requred, otherwise the air valves would be running all the time trying to level the car constantly!

Adjustability and use:

The kit allows you to alter the height sensor range with interchangeable shims. While we don’t recommend using the full range of these adjusters, the maximum lowering is as follows:

Ride Height Range:

Front: -45mm to +40mm (approx)
Rear: -45mm to +40mm (approx)

Lower the vehicle in “low” or “lowest” mode:

If you just want to drive around with the lowest possible settings and don’t care about ride quality, this one might be for you. Keep in mind that you’ll be running the vehicle below what Tesla intended, and wear on the bump stops and suspension may increase if you keep the car “slammed” to the ground.

Add additional rake so that the car is level while towing:

The Model S and X may sag while towing trailers with heavy tongue weights, so adding some offset in the leveling links can help to compensate for this.

Raise the Model S / X:

If you use your S or X offroad, you may prefer to have all of the suspension modes slightly higher. By running the links shorter than the OEM length you can raise the vehicle. This is esspecially useful because the S runs at a fairly low ride height on the highway – so if you regularly drive on rough highways this may be of interest to you.

Installation Details:

Installation can be completed in around 1 hour by an experienced technician, or by yourself at home if you’re handy. The hardest part will likely be the removal of the wheels! The work can be done on a hoist or on the ground. Required parts for installation include a heat gun or blow-dryer, and something to carefully pry the height sensor link off the ball it sits on after heating. Plastic trim removal tools are a good idea but not needed. We’ve used a wrench and pliers with success – just be careful with it!
